We are aware that ‘Sanctuary’ might not appeal to everyone. After all, it fulfils a very particular niche, and it’s knee-deep in ambient and avant-garde flair. Yet, we’d urge the keen listener to give it ago regardless, as it’s proved to be quite a rejuvenating experience for us, four minutes of incredible bliss and nostalgic elegance. It’s pure escapism, brought to you by Minneapolis-based producer palex.
Beyond the record’s hypnotic charge and cathartic effects, lies a rather meaningful layer, with palex using ‘Sanctuary’ and the wider album as an escape and a soothing outlet, celebrating spirituality amidst challenging personal circumstances. In that sense, the nuanced minimalism hiding behind the single must be appreciate as the highest form of personal expression, a way to materialize deep-rooted feelings into the aural plane. ‘Inner Light’ expands that very same premise into a ten-track journey.
Delving deeper into the creative and personal ethos that propels the ‘Sanctuary’, palex explains: “While producing this track, I was deeply drawn to spirituality and the idea of a ‘spiritual awakening,’ which grew out of an ongoing dissociative episode I was going through at the time. I made ‘Sanctuary’ as a kind of safe space within my day-to-day life. Music has always been something I lean on during difficult periods, so it means a lot to me that I was able to create something that gives me comfort.”
