Kings County are very adamant about what they stand for. In fact, a quick look at their Instagram bio will reveal how the band sees themselves as a ‘high-energy hard rock’ outfit, a description that does fit the project very well, but that perhaps undersells it a bit. You see, the Floridian rockers go even beyond their own genre, drawing inspiration from nostalgic hard rock and then moving into hardcore and metal territories.
‘The Dead of Night’ is the perfect evidence of that, a hard-hitting, high-octane uplifting cut that’s relentless and fierce. What’s interesting is that there are some glam flavourings in it, especially in tasteful use of guitar licks. Yet, Kings County’s vocals are delivered with a quasi-screamo quality, shifting the whole record into darker territories. Kings County are Rob Dexter (Vocals, Bass), Steve Bell (Guitars, Vocals), Joe Lopez (Drums), Bill Kania (Guitars, Vocals), and Robbie Dexter (bass).
Recorded with producer Chuck Alkazian, ‘The Dead of Night’ hides a meaningful layer of lyricism behind its electrifying rock livery. As Rob Dexter explains: “Beneath the power and intensity, this song is about confronting your inner demons, surviving your darkest moments, and discovering what you’re made of when there’s nowhere left to run. The darkness isn’t necessarily the enemy. Sometimes, it reveals who you really are.” We appreciate such strong dualism… unfiltered energy on the surface, and gloomy reflections underneath.
