As debut EPs go, ‘RESET’ is a damn good record. Penned by Idaho-based outfit Afternoon Sister, the record introduces us to the project’s kaleidoscopic, heartfelt and otherworldly aural charge, boasting five like-minded tracks spearheaded by the group’s head honcho Alice Ventura. The EP is out now via North Corona Records.
As we dive into ‘RESET’, we were instantly captured by the immense nostalgia exuding from ‘Don’t Cross Yer Finger’. Yet, it’s the sort of nostalgia that’s calming and reassuring, almost ethereal. We must confess, the track kidnapped us for a while… it was surprisingly soothing, from an emotional standpoint. ‘Ache’ introduces Ventura’s vocals and imaginative songwriting, veering into a plastic blend of dream-pop, shoegaze and psychedelic indie. The title track is instead way more hazy and hypnotic, right before ‘I Guess It Is Goodbye’ leaves listeners with a lush, cinematic slow burn.
In terms of influences, Venture is rather adamant about the eclectic pool of artists she’s drawing from. Figures such as Neil Young, Mazzy Star, Chromatics, and Air all bring something unique to the Afternoon Sister’s project, effectively creating a melting pot of genres and moods that feels rather timeless and elegant. ‘RESET E.P.’ is an impressively strong offering, a clear sign of a band doing its own thing, and doing it mightily well.
