We have had a lot of debuting artists recently, and it’s exciting to observe so much good music entering the global airwaves. ‘Arrhythmia (Love Me Tonight, Tonight)’ is the latest piece to blow our minds, an imaginative, hard-hitting and futuristic offering courtesy of Seattle-based visionary Aphrajay Appollinaire. Teaming up with Billboard-charting producer Aiyan and Grammy-nominated engineer Zachary Jablow, she’s now working on a forthcoming EP, ‘Manic Princess’, expected later this year.
Despite Aphrajay herself describing the project as pop, we are quite surprised by the record’s alternative, leftfield character, in a way that even moves it into digicore territory. Boasting a jungle-inspired, kinetic production, ‘Arrhythmia (Love Me Tonight, Tonight)’ then develops Appollinaire’s luscious and otherworldly vocals into a thousand harmonies, making for a rather hypnotic result. Curiously, the main chorus is also introduced at the end, making the piece a concise and minimalistic two-and-a-half-minute gem.
Delving deeper into the lyrical ethos that propels the song, Appollinaire explains: “It captures the tension of developing feelings for someone while wondering if they’ll ever be returned. I wrote it from a real experience, drafting the lyrics on a flight from Seattle to Los Angeles.” ‘Arrhythmia (Love Me Tonight, Tonight)’ does a good job of translating those intense, slightly anxious emotional states into musical language, gently oscillating between aural catharsis and alternative escapism.
