The keen reader might remember American artist Joey P. from a feature we published a few months ago, praising ‘Walked In’ (the project’s original debut effort) as “delivered with expansive pathos and unmatched melodism”. Since then, Joey P. has been gearing up for his first release of the year, ‘playboy’, a two-track EP that further illustrates all the aural wonder the project has to offer.
From a sonic standpoint, the EP practices all of the main principles of the astral R&B manifesto Joey P. is known for. Imagine a soulful, vaporous production with a crepuscular vibe, music that feels gentle and hypnotic, but also luscious and elegant. The American talent’s vocals are often delivered with a certain nonchalance, dancing effortlessly over the groovy beat. ‘right there’ provides a slow-paced, kinetic R&B mantra that’s a joy to listen to. ‘sneak attack freestyle’ takes instead a heavier hip-hop identity.
As the project evolves, grows, and shifts into its true artistic form, Joey P. remains positive and excited about what’s to come. As he explains: “Life is good, I’m a version of myself I used to dream of. It’s possible, anything and everything that you want…it’s possible.” We appreciate the laidback vibe Joey seems to apply to both his music and life experience. In times of chaos, the Chicago-based creative provides an outlet for escapism and sultriness.
