It’s been quite a busy year for teen talent Lucy Care. After releasing the EP ‘Sunkissed’ back in February, the British songstress headed on a local and European run of shows, including the Telford International Centre in March and four shows in Germany’s Black Forest region in July. The project is quite peculiar, in that it stems from a school endeavour named Qube Records. Under the guise of producers Darren Roberts, Care has been blooming into an experienced vocalist, together with a live band of her peers.
‘Sunkissed’ doesn’t seek to reinvent the wheel, instead focusing on relatable and approachable material. The record’s opening title track reveals the sonic blueprint that will define the rest of the EP: analogue instruments and a rather minimalistic perspective on arrangements. Guitar, drums, bass, the occasional keys: Lucy Care’s evocative vocals don’t need much to shine, even in the more nostalgic and synth-driven ‘Out of the Loop’.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the EP, we are told: “It is a pure slice of pop music, referring to lots of moments in the history of the genre across its six tracks.” It’s a perfect description of a truly eclectic record, one that doesn’t necessarily fixate on a single mood or a particular feel, instead navigating the last few decades of popular music while showcasing Lucy Care’s vocal versatility in the process. The future is definitely bright… stay tuned!
