The keen reader might remember Marina Yozora from a feature we published last year, praising ‘Touché’ as “championing an aural panorama that’s incredibly expansive, lush and hazy”. We stand by our words; The London-based shoegaze songstress has managed to build a sonic space packed with escapism and spacious tones, something that has recently resurfaced in ‘Snow Heat’, a brooding, expansive cut released by Marina on June 5th.
Today, Yozora returns with an acoustic version of the same piece, a stripped-back gem that sees ‘Snow Heat’ being dialled back to a gentle acoustic guitar and Marina Yozora’s nostalgic, introspective vocals. Surprisingly, the emotional charge stays the same, as it’s clear that Yozora’s vocals are doing the heavy lifting, especially thanks to their hypnotic, otherworldly quality. While this single is not technically shoegaze, it still carries all the marks of pure escapism and ethereal allure. We wouldn’t expect anything less from Yozora.
In a way, the dualism between vast shoegaze soundscapes and intimate acoustic settings mirrors the song’s deep lyrical dualism, with ‘snow’ and ‘heat’ co-existing in highly philosophical and memory-driven lyricism. It doesn’t end here: ‘Snow Heat’ will receive more eclectic interpretations set to be unveiled in the coming months.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the new single, as well as what’s to come in the next few months, Yozora explains: “Just as memories change over time, ‘Snow Heat’ has changed within me, and I wanted to express all as much as possible. Over the coming months, I’ll be releasing several different versions of the song: acoustic, acoustic with violin and cello, a solo shoegaze version, and a solo reimagined version. They’re not remixes or alternate takes to me; they’re different emotional states of the same memory. Every version reveals something that the others couldn’t.”
