We were writing about SYOT just over a month ago, celebrating ‘PADO’ as “taking a step back into the group’s bold Korean roots.” Such a direction is still very much valid in the trio’s follow-up ‘Kish’, although the sonic palette has been expanded to charming jazz influences and a kinetic dance beat. As it’s often the case in SYOT’s three-dimensional catalogue, this is a very dynamic and malleable release, a track that’s rather unconventional and fresh.
That’s where the genius of the Seoul-based outfit lies: they are writing their own story, developing their own unique style that seems to weave into cultures, tradition and modernity with unmatched charisma. SYOT are producer G.QOO, jazz pianist Hanbeen Park, and gayageum player Yoolim Lee.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the record, SYOT explain: “‘Kish’ is inspired by the ancient city of Kish, often regarded as one of the cradles of civilisation. Reflecting the city’s role as a meeting point of cultures, the track unites different musical traditions into a single, evolving sound. Built around a reimagined Jajinmori Korean rhythmic cycle, it weaves together the spirit of early blues, shuffle grooves, the lyrical voice of Gayageum, and expressive piano improvisation.”
