Abby Lee Returns with Evocative Cut ‘Sing My Blues Away’

A beautiful, luscious piece that greatly draws from the American Blues tradition, yet that feels contemporary and relevant even to this day.

The keen reader will gladly remember Abby Lee from a feature we published earlier this year, celebrating ‘Death of Me’ as “a bittersweet, emotional piece steeped in relatable lyrics and lovable imagery”. We stand by our words: in fact, such a description applies to Lee’s wider catalogue, thanks to her evocative vocals and bold, malleable delivery. ‘Sing My Blues Away’ continues this very same trajectory, albeit with slightly more uplifting energy.

A masterful and soulful-flavoured Blues effort, ‘Sing My Blues Away’ sees Abby Lee team up with Grammy-winning producer, recording and mixing engineer Justin Miller, guitar virtuoso Kenny Rosario-Pugh, and legendary bass player Stacey McGee, alongside co-writer and artistic partner Tim Campbell on drums and piano. No wonder the record sounds so well recorded and performed; there’s a stellar cast of musicians behind it.

Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the song, Lee explains: “This song was written in collaboration with my writing partner, composer and pianist, Timothy Campbell. Tim was playing around on the piano between song ideas, and I started recording because it was so beautiful, whimsical, and soulful. I knew it was the perfect backdrop to a story I’d been dying to tell.” The result is a beautiful, luscious piece that greatly draws from the American Blues tradition, yet that feels contemporary and relevant even to this day.
