2026 is shaping up to be a pivotal year for Kim McClay. Following up on previous singles ‘Velveteen Girls’ and ‘So Close’, the New York City-based songstress has now unveiled a powerful EP, ‘Worth It’, a record that signals her definite return to the international music scene after a nearly three-year-long hiatus. As it stands, it’s obvious that McClay has not lost her sharp lyrical wit, pairing observant and relatable storytelling with overall sonic eclecticism.
We are intrigued by the stylistic width featured in the record. While ‘Velveteen Girls’ fiercely introduces the EP, episodes such as ‘Firefly’ and ‘So Close’ return to a more melodically efficient and mellow shore. ‘Worth It’ marks a groovy and uplifting break, while ‘Something Like Love’ takes the EP to an end in an epic, pathos-driven manner.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘Worth It’ indulges in meaningful territories, yet hides behind what seemingly can look like pop-like formulas, at least on the surface. At a deeper look. Kim’s reflection on society and inherent change starts to become evident. As she explains: “I wanted to pose questions about value. What are we worth to each other? What do we owe our neighbours? Our family? Our friends? I wanted to touch on the importance of vulnerability and how valuable it is to turn into what’s uncomfortable and face it head-on.”
