Everything about Pick Up Goliath screams rage, pain, and confusion. Finding its aural borders into experimental metalcore and prog rock melodism, the project moves with strong synergy between its sonic character and the intricate lyrical matter. ‘La Sombra’ is the perfect evidence of that: marking Puck Up Goliath’s latest effort, the track feels hard-hitting, gritty, and noisy, but also meaningful and emotionally relatable. Vocals are scrambled into brooding screams, distortions are harsh and prominent, and the record’s kinetic charge is intense and urgent.
Behind the project, we find producer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Sam George. Based in Spain, George operates out of his Dolby Atmos-authorised Mammoth Sound Studio in Cáceres, a situation that allows him to conserve the maximum creative independence. ‘La Sombra’ is taken from the project’s forthcoming EP ‘Salt & Static’.
From a lyrical standpoint, ‘La Sombra’ takes a hard look at the emotional whirlwind that surrounds loss, bereavement, and the inner cost of dealing with the aftermath of a difficult period. Grief is a central concept in the song, a theme that directly ties into Sam George’s heightened introspection. As he explains: “La Sombra was probably the hardest song on the record to write. Grief is confusing because it doesn’t move in a straight line. Some days, the memory of someone feels comforting, and other days it feels like something haunting you. There’s guilt in moving forward, guilt in standing still, guilt in the things left unresolved. This song came from trying to make sense of those contradictions honestly, even when there wasn’t a clear answer.”
