‘Flying Toward Tomorrow’ continues what’s been a very productive year for Detroit-based guitarist and composer SARK. Having released a bunch of singles, the talented musician has put his unique musical character on full display. Imagine a playful blend between nostalgic videogame-esque themes and hints of fusion and synth-pop… everything that SARK touches makes for an intriguing and electrifying listening experience, and it’s hard not to feel like the main character of a game or movie.
In that sense, ‘Flying Toward Tomorrow’ takes an unexpected turn in terms of arrangement and sonic character. While maintaining SARK’s retro flair, the record embraces a more laidback and instrumental-driven approach, leaving ample space for a luscious and melodic guitar solo. Around it, we still find a wealth of 80s-leaning synth work. The piece is certainly one of SARK’s more ‘serious’ releases to date, a cinematic cut that turns towards the elegant and anthemic.
Delving deeper into the creative ethos that propels the track, SARK explains: “For this track, I went with a more authentic sound like guitar, piano, bass guitar and drums. Most of the time, I stick with electronic drums and synth bass sounds. It was fun changing it up a bit”. We appreciate SARK’s willingness to challenge himself, scrambling the aural formula in favour of a more eclectic and virtuoso-esque piece. It would indeed function well as an emotive soundtrack.
