The keen reader might remember Solum from a feature we published last summer, praising ‘Circles’ as “jumping with both feet into coldwave territories, with a punchy bassline and spacious guitars on top of a fast-paced, roaring drum groove.” We loved the record back then; it felt urgent and electrifying, but also moody and dark… the perfect aural cocktail for our complex times. Everything changes, including Solum itself: ‘Burn’ marks the project’s latest effort, a bold turn into melancholic electronica and vivid lyrical storytelling.
Solum’s alternative adventure started originally in November 2025, when ‘Forget’ introduced the world to the London-based producer’s brand-new sonic era. While darkwave influences are seemingly gone, the overall expressivity is still the same, quite melancholic and sombre, always moving on the fringes of popular music. ‘Burn’ is decisively more electronic and laidback, a striking layering of gritty synth and noisy beats. The track’s hypnotic kinetic charge is perfectly balanced by its oblique poignancy.
Delving into the painful lyrical ethos that propels the record, Solum explains: “It’s all about heartbreak, being in love with someone, and they just used and hurt those feelings you had for them. ‘Burn’ tells the emotions of the impulsive stages of being betrayed by someone you love, how you want karma to find them, and all you want is revenge, no matter if it swallows you up as well.” That’s quite a striking message, one that makes a lot of sense when considering the brooding character behind the single.
