Guitar lovers rejoice! Norwegian virtuoso Filip Dahl has returned with a brand new record, a bluesy, evocative cut that once again highlights his unmatched musical skills. The track follows up on December’s ‘If You Saw Me Now’, a piece that leaned into a more malleable, ballad-driven character. In comparison, ‘Flying High’ still enjoys a laidback and slow-paced arrangement, yet it cedes the spotlight to Dahl’s melodic guitar solo and progressive distortion.
Composed and recorded by Filip himself, ‘Flying High’ doesn’t lose time, instantly jumping onto its main theme, a triplet-based feel that acts as a powerful canvas for Dahl’s stunning guitar phrasing. His style is rather simple, but very effective. Filip doesn’t seek to ‘shred’, so to speak, instead aiming to communicate a certain mood, deliver a piece of music that’s relatable and hypnotic. Along the way, the Norwegian creative is also seen shifting onto keys and acoustic guitar, before closing the song in electric fashion.
Crucial is the accompanying video, giving us a visual perspective of Dahl’s focused playing style. As he explains: “The release of ‘Flying High’ will be accompanied by a dedicated YouTube video, with video clips of me playing the various main motifs in the track. For anyone that is not previously familiar with me as an artist, I believe this record will be a great introduction to me, my guitar playing and my music.”
