Lostbird Debuts with Cinematic Piano Piece ‘Drift’

‘Drift’ is the record we need in such gloomy times. A lifeline towards escapism and cathartic introspection.

It is rather hard to convey with words the kind of aural virtue that propels ‘Drift’ to the top of our listening queue. In fact, we suspect the record to be best enjoyed in person, perhaps on a rainy winter evening or during a foggy Sunday morning. Manifesting itself as a cinematic piano-driven piece, ‘Drift’ occupies the best part of three minutes, hypnotising listeners with its intimate emotional character, one drenched in brooding melodism and quiet dynamism. Both comforting and melancholic, the track will likely facilitate a series of nostalgic thoughts and resolutions.

Behind such a soundtrack-coded masterpiece, we find Leeds-based composer Lostbird. We don’t know much about the project, and we’d argue we don’t need to know a bunch more. Lostbird’s mysterious aura helps its intriguing character, as it emerges from a crowded music landscape with a specific identity and incredible tenderness. Perhaps ‘Drift’ is the record we need in such gloomy times. A lifeline towards escapism and cathartic introspection.

Delving deeper into the track, Lostbird explains: “It was inspired by childhood memories of safety and ease, evenings spent in parks, the smell of grass, fading daylight and a time when the world felt smaller and gentler.” Such a statement fits the project’s overall imagery, often featuring hazy hand-drawn artworks depicting birds, landscapes, and botanical symbolism. While ‘Drift’ is Lostbird’s debut effort, we are told there’s more on the way. Stay tuned.
