German indietronica stalwarts The Notwist have always been on the move, always evolving, never content with the status quo. It’s a respectable ethos, one that has taken them far and that has gained us (their public) a wealth of incredible records and charming soundtracks. ‘How The Story Ends’ is the latest chapter of The Notwist saga, a perfect introduction to their upcoming album ‘News from Planet Zombie’, out on March 3rd 2026 via Morr Music.
Following up on the group’s previous single ‘X-Ray’, also taken from the forthcoming LP, ‘How The Story Ends’ chooses a slightly different approach, delivering a cover of the Georgia/Portland band Lovers’ stripped-down original, as they first heard it on an old Kill Rock Stars compilation. Slightly unconventional and rather organic, the track leaves temporarily behind The Notwist’s usual electronic textures in favour of a jangly arrangement that’s quite live-coded; some might call it imperfect, but that’s where its charm truly lies.
‘How The Story Ends’ was recorded over one week at Import Export, a non-profit space for arts and music. ‘News from Planet Zombie’ will contain a second cover, a version of Neil Young’s ‘Red Sun’.
