As Vilalta’s soothing guitar tones and evocative vocals make their way into our world, it’s hard not to feel grateful for such a stirring listening experience. Packed with fragments of folk intimacy and pop nostalgia, ‘Out Loud Thoughts’ delivers exactly what it advertises: a collection of personal pieces wrapped in timeless organic arrangements and inspiring escapism. As we make our way into the album’s nine songs, we are met with bilingual prowess and a constant retro flair, especially from an aural standpoint.
Exploring soul, funk, and folk-pop with hidden hints of jazz virtuosity, ‘Out Loud Thoughts’ runs the risk of being misunderstood as an innocent, inconspicuous body of work. One couldn’t be more wrong: under the hood, it’s easy to get a glimpse of Victòria Vilalta’s creative wisdom. From the uplifting and soulful goodness of ‘Vibing’, to the dreamy and lush textures in the title track, passing through the understated sacred melancholia of ‘Coldness’: everything points towards a series of conscious musical choices, as the London-based, Catalan songstress fearlessly digs deeper into her artistry.
As Vilalta explains: “‘Out loud thoughts’ was created in London studios. It was self-written and self-produced, relating the songs’ meanings to their sound. It entails collaborations with other musicians in writing some of the tracks and recording most of them. Each song conveys an emotion, ideas or values that are important to me. I always understood music as emotion.” Awash with heartwarming melodies and gentle lyricism, ‘Out Loud Thoughts’ is a masterful exercise in introspection and creativity. If you are looking for an elegant, expressive record, you just found it.
