Luan Luan Returns with Uplifting, Carefree Anthem ‘Northern Lights’

The keen reader will be plenty familiar with Brighton-based creative Luan Luan. Featuring ‘Would Be Better’ earlier this year, we celebrated the project as “approaching music and art-making with a highly meaningful allure, often channelling personal experience into material that’s vibrant and relatable”. Luan Luan’s latest effort, ‘Northern Lights’, follows the same script, perhaps with a more euphoric outlook and dance-inducing grooves. Embracing disco jazz and funk influences with soulful allure, the record delivers a vibrant and wholesome aural journey steeped in liberation and self-expression, all themes that deeply relate to Luan Luan’s forward-thinking and Queer-coded ethos.

In fact, ‘Northern Lights’ could be seen as a reaction to an overly gloomy reality. Amongst a political and societal landscape that’s failing many of our fellow citizens, the song seeks to remind us all about the few safe spaces that are still available; places where authenticity and carefree enjoyment are the main priority. Clubs are often a perfect example of such an environment, an oasis of positivity, community, and a great outlook for living in the moment, even just for one night only.

Delving deeper into ‘Northern Lights’, Luan Luan explains: “At its core, it is about finding freedom in nightlife, in clubs, as an escape from the daily struggles and social surveillance. It captures the feeling of dancing with the person that you are attracted to freely, between the colourful lights of the club (hence the ‘’northern lights’) where nothing else matters but the moment itself.”
