If you were looking for a working example of ‘worldbuilding’ in the musical realm, then you just found it. Meet New Laconia, a Ukrainian eclectic outfit with a knack for multi-layered records and borderless imagination. While their music is incredibly hypnotic and very well performed, the overarching lyrical concept is even more complex, with keen sci-fi tales delivered through instrumental pieces and animated videos. We did feature the project earlier this year, on the occasion of the release of ‘Coming Home’.
While that specific composition told the story of a melancholic intergalactic journey, the project’s latest single, ‘New Laconia’, shifts into a more hopeful and quirky gear, narrating the tale of Planet Simmetry, “a place rumoured to hold the key to the lost gift of Time”. A traveller (referenced in a previous record) arrives on that very same planet, initiating a cascade of events that then connects to other past songs. That’s how New Laconia are able to build such an expansive fantasy world. Behind all this nuanced work, we find Ukrainian creative Alex Syniakov.
Drenched in saxophone euphoria and elegant jazz-leaning allure, ‘New Laconia’ showcases the organic side of the talented project. Delving deeper into the piece, Syniakov explains: “This composition embodies our approach to creating music: we don’t just write tracks, we build worlds. New Laconia is a philosophy of the project, the foundation for the entire story to come”.
