It took us a while to fully unpack the artistic depth behind ‘SCARECROW 2005’. You see, on the surface, the track is rather simple and minimalist; you’ve got a gentle kinetic layer propping up gloomy guitar tones and melancholic melodies, all crowned by SOMETHING FOLLOWED ME HOME’s meaningful, evocative vocals, here delivered with distinct restraint and poised introspection.
Yet, the song itself is far from elegant or tender; written as an emotional release against romantic disconnection, the piece acts as a cathartic tool, allowing the British troubadour to come to terms with painful experiences. This also makes a lot of sense when considering the impromptu, cohesive songwriting effort behind it. Leon Robinson found himself writing the piece on a gloomy evening, just over a month ago; a sign that he needed to get a message off his chest. The result is surprisingly good and relatable, a short yet substantial slice of vibrant melancholy.
To note, SOMETHING FOLLOWED ME HOME is now a duo, thanks to the addition of Phoebe Lawson. Delving deeper into ‘SCARECROW 2005’, Robinson explains: “It aims at fragile friendships with lyrics such ‘No need to mask it, this ain’t Halloween. We’ve got some issues that need burying’”. A timely release, one that makes us hopeful for the project’s future.
