We are aware that ‘Reality’ is not a record for everyone. Stemming from the boundary-pushing artistry of sui generis duo Tlön, the album is a striking collection of electroacoustic pieces, a blend of orchestral string prowess and noisy field recordings for a highly evocative result. Part haunting and part wondrous, ‘Reality’ kidnaps listeners in an otherworldly, surreal universe, a place where sounds have suddenly taken a three-dimensional shape and found noises narrate an intense, melancholic story.
If you don’t believe us, all you have to do is give ‘Reality’ a try. We’d recommend approaching the album with open-mindedness, fleeting any pre-conceived beliefs and expectations. Simply, let yourself be lulled by Tlön’s meaningful and purposeful creativity. The pair is on this occasion particularly inspired by the magical realism of writer Jorge Luis Borges, helping them “distort reality in a mesmerising way”.
As mentioned, the listening experience behind ‘Reality’ is highly unusual and wholesome, perhaps challenging for some. That’s what you get when aural explorers such as Sara Övinge and Gregor Riddell get together under the guise of a common goal. The former is an award-winning violinist active in the classical, contemporary and improvisational realm, and the latter a cellist, composer, and sonic innovator blurring the lines between the classical world and the experimental scene.
