‘Anemoia’ is escapism at its best. Showcasing Robbie Z’s fascination with feverish nostalgia and dreamy, soothing tones, the record takes a striking look at the early ‘2000s and ‘2010s as an era that was brighter and happier, at least in Robbie’s young eyes. At only 23 years old, the Bulgarian creative process involves exploring our gloomy reality through music, as a cathartic tool, penning a string of electrifying and gentle goodness, all sharing a deeply eclectic stylistic ethos.
Jumping from recession-pop euphoria (‘THE SUN IS LOUD’) to uplifting hip-hop-flavoured cuts (‘USELESS COOL KIDZ’), passing through quirky dance vibes (‘FISH’) and melancholic, playful indie vibes (‘BUTTERFLY BLUES’), ‘Anemoia’ is simply a collection of memories, fragments of stillness from an era that’s now gone, but that still lives in Robbie Z’s deep-rooted imagination. From a lyrical standpoint, the London-based artist is quite upfront about the premise behind the record, specifying that he hasn’t in fact lived any of it.
We must praise his vocals, though; malleable and charming, Robbie Z perfectly adapts to any production style. Delving deeper into ‘Anemoia’, he explains: “I wanted to capture the feeling of Anemoia through a summery polished lens. With the project, I also challenged myself to release music more often than usual and expand my sonic palette as an artist”.
