J0VANNA Deals in Emotional Honesty in Latest Gem ‘Call Your Mama (Don’t Call Me)’

Elegant and melancholic, ‘Call Your Mama (Don’t Call Me)’ stands as a rather striking offering from J0VANNA, unfurling an introspective lyrical journey that’s intimate and meaningful. Written as a nostalgic post-mortem of an old relationship, the American songstress recounts all the confusion and emotional conflicts that followed a sudden romantic breakup. A bold and purposeful piece, the single seeks the 25-year-old creative reaching out to her 16-year-old self, looking to unbury a painful moment that needed to be analysed and processed.

‘Call Your Mama (Don’t Call Me)’ is exactly that, a therapeutic post-mortem in sonic form, a slice of honesty and acceptance towards destructive self-beliefs. Perhaps it’s also a way for J0VANNA to regain ownership of her own story. We suspect that’s been happening already, as the record proudly showcases. Incredibly lush and classy, ‘Call Your Mama (Don’t Call Me)’ engages in gripping neo-soul and R&B goodness, layering a slow-paced, sultry arrangement under J0VANNA’s malleable, magnetic vocals.

Delving deeper into the song, she explains: “This song is for the younger me who struggled to process a situation that felt overwhelming, isolating, and emotionally heavy. I broke up with him because something didn’t feel right. I had a gut feeling, even though everything seemed fine from the outside. When the communication suddenly stopped, I was left with a lot of unanswered questions. It left me emotionally affected and unsure of what had gone wrong. I wrote this song to give my younger self the voice and closure she didn’t have at the time.”
