We approach Josh Indio’s nuanced aural universe with a great degree of reverence and respect. Unfurling a listening experience that’s intimate and emotive, the London-based creative embraces a heartwarming brand of indie-folk infused with a certain eclecticism, delivering wholesome and nostalgic pieces drenched in gentle lyrical flair. What more could you wish for? Melancholic, dreamy, and generously escapism-driven, ‘the lEaP’ is a wonderful EP, a welcome debut effort from Josh Indio.
In it, we should first and foremost celebrate the title track, ‘the leap’, a piece that completes a series of three singles now solidifying into a cohesive, magnetic record. Compared to ‘12 and ‘i don’t mind’, ‘the leap’ feels more expansive and hypnotic, with reverb-soaked guitar tones and haunting, earthy soundscapes aiding a prominent ‘angelic’ quality. We’d argue that Indio’s malleable, charming vocals are at their best shape in this exact song, sharing a keen ‘floating’ quality and an uplifting, empowering lyrical ethos.
Written with collaborator Ewan Samms, ‘the lEaP’ is a rather weightless effort, not just from a production standpoint, but from a songwriting one; the lyrical imagery is particularly approachable in ‘the leap’ (the single), here focused on the pursuit of inner dreams and the child-like wonder for discovering the unknown. It’s a fitting end to a vibrant EP, an end that feels elegant and hazy – just like the future might be: “Tied down, don’t let your dreams be forgotten”.
