What we instantly appreciate in ‘Haven’ is the grittiness of its distortions, with sharp, grating guitars evoking a noisy, grunge-flavoured aural panorama, one that feels nostalgic, yet otherworldly, kinda timeless. Penned by Irish outfit The Bonzai Pipeline, the single develops fiercely and boldly, unfurling a hard-hitting and chaotic three minutes of pure rock euphoria. Leaving glamorous sound design behind, the record focuses on a flurry of relentless riffs and potent drums, yet leaving ample space for vocals.
Such a dualistic formula is incredibly impressive; if the listeners are met with coarse distortions and striking guitars, they are also given a great deal of lyrical freedom and personal relatability. ‘Haven’ is a song that takes pride in its open-ended character; we won’t try to give you a synopsis of its lyrical content, as we suspect that’s not what the goal is here. Partly hypnotic and decadent, the song is bound to connect with listeners in a myriad of different ways.
For the Dublin-based project, ‘Haven’ is a particularly crucial song, as it marked the first thing they wrote when reuniting after Covid. It is taken from the overarching EP/double single ‘The Six Minute Bonzai Power Hour’, shipped with an old, revived track, ‘2 Out Of 3’.
