Continuing their quest towards a new album, ‘World B’, Glaswegian outfit Spoonr have returned with their latest single, ‘The Box’, a suspiciously inquisitive and roaring gem that follows up from previous effort ‘Analogue’, a more all-out, anthemic cut. The Scottish group are now embracing an eclectic rock livery, oscillating between potent pop-punk motifs and sonically rich indie goodness. Whichever way you look at it, there’s no denying that ‘The Box’ is not your average indie piece.
Lyrically meaningful and introspective, the song draws inspiration from the fractured reality around us all, sparking a charged discussion on critical thinking and cultural independence. That’s what the box-related imagery stands for. As Spoonr explain: “There’s an underlying lyrical connection/stronger observational aspect this time, with ‘The Box’, it’s… really a call to think more for yourself – to think outside the box”.
Singer Dudley and guitarist Nick Prentice do a great job on the record, blending a seemingly playful and uplifting aural livery with relevant and urgent songwriting. ‘The Box’ showcases a different side of the Glasgow-based band, one that we are happy they have uncovered. We also appreciate the piece’s slow-burning character, jumping from nocturne, poised verses to striking choruses. Overall, a worthy listening experience, one that makes us very hopeful for Spoonr’s forthcoming album.
