After having written about Claudia Balla a fair bit, we can look back and collect hints of what the Switzerland-based songstress stands for. Boasting extensive classical training and an eclectic outlook on music, Balla manages to be both relatable and friendly while maintaining a high degree of elegance and melodism. If ‘Imaginary Boyfriend’ was uplifting and playful, follow-up effort ‘Video Game’ appears to delve into more nostalgic territories.
Packed with lots of orchestral lusciousness, ‘Video Game’ feels rather poignant, with Claudia strikingly reflecting on addictive love and emotional dependency. Her charming, malleable vocals are the perfect match for such an expressive pop production, featuring a wealth of cinematic pianos and subtle string-driven atmospheres. As always, we can appreciate the complex carpet of vocal harmonies and backing vocals, truly supercharging ‘Video Game’ with anthemic flair.
Born in Hungary and now living in Geneva, Balla constantly weaves in and out of a rather personal brand of pop, one that’s drenched in dreaminess, folk-flavourings, and orchestral bits. It all makes sense when looking at Claudia’s longstanding career. Shining a light on ‘Video Game’, she explains: “Some people might smoke or drink, while others will be hooked on video games. But can someone be addicted to another person? How to differentiate ‘healthy love’ from emotional dependency or obsession?”
