The Shrubs Returns with Ambiguous, Feverish Single ‘Fall Behind’

It’s been a while since we wrote about The Shrubs, precisely since April 2024, when we celebrated their album ‘Echoes of a Dream’ as “providing a listening experience that’s eclectic and liquid, certainly hypnotising and evocative”. We stand by our words; at the time, the Texan band felt quite hazy and cathartic, channelling soothing indie influences with an underrated psychedelic quality.

Well, such a striking artistic formula has been further refined for The Shrubs’ recent return to the global airwaves. Following up on the jagged, epic, and decadent gem ‘Lines’, released back in February, the Houston-based group have now unveiled their latest effort, ‘Fall Behind’, a track that admittedly finds refuge in a more uplifting aural livery. It’s merely a facade, though, as the song’s lyricism hides a rather breakup-themed dark twist. It’s a dualism that works well in this case.

Echoes of jangly surf-rock and atmospheric textures well pair with lead singer Laura’s ethereal, dreamy vocals, here drenched in large reverb and an angelic, fever-dream-esque character. Delving into the origins behind ‘Fall Behind’, The Shrubs explains: “This particular track was written by Miguel back in 2019, it took us years of sifting through different versions of it to create what it has finally become!”
