We have spent a considerable amount of time f***ing about with a potentially witty and wondrous description for bland’s latest EP, ‘consumables’. You see, it’s a rather great record, a nugget of unmatched energy and charisma with a modern, sharp and unapologetic alt-rock livery. Veering towards post-punk with a great deal of spoken word goodness, the EP embraces a British-esque flair, especially in its fierce, all-out vocal delivery. Guitar distortions are relentless, yet kind of elegant, and with the occasional detuned decadence playing the main character role.
Anyway, getting back to the description we were looking for… we just thought that the most appropriate way to celebrate ‘consumables’ would be simply to call it an explosion of energy, a kick in the balls that listeners won’t be forgetting anytime soon. In fact, we are writing this piece rather early in the morning, and it’s fair to say that bland have woken us up perfectly. Over five hard-hitting, striking episodes, the EP makes a dent in everyday boredom, focusing on the small ‘fixation’ people use to distract themselves from the unbreakable passage of time.
Hailing from Winnipeg, Canada, bland are also very good musicians, a quality that goes a long way in solidifying their tight, punchy sound. Delving deeper into the EP, vocalist Ike Hedenstierna explains: “These songs came from all over the place, but recording them together gave them a shape. We finally took the leap. Now we’re writing music that sounds like us, whatever that ends up being.”
