‘Hollywood Signs’ marks our point of entry into Kramies’ effortless, weightless sonic universe. We like what we hear; here at Mesmerized we truly appreciate anything ethereal, cathartic, anything that aids escapism. ‘Hollywood Signs’ does exactly that, right before adding a further layer of evocative energy and emotive restraint. Built upon hazy and haunting folk matter, the single is rather expansive and powerful, with Kramies’ malleable and gentle vocals frequently getting lost in a sea of textures and never-ending echoes.
What more could you want? Just enter ‘Hollywood Signs’ and get lost in it. That’s what we did, and we don’t regret it one bit. In fact, we are happy to report that there’s an album in the works, ‘Goodbye Dreampop Troubadour’, a record that, as the title suggests, seeks to break from the past, doing so by embracing a more cloudy folk outlook. Mission accomplished; ‘Hollywood Signs’ manages to sound both hopeful and melancholic, oscillating between light and darkness with unmatched elegance.
Curiously, we have noticed a creeping sense of having discovered something precious, something that we may not fully understand yet. But we will. Diving deeper into the record, Kramies explains: “It was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Mario J. McNulty, best known for his work with David Bowie. I love this song and album. I played 90% of all instruments, so it means a lot to me.”
