Cartography Returns with Hypnotic, Cinematic Record ‘california sun’

Atmospheric and vibrant. ‘california sun’ is one of those records that should be enjoyed at face value. It delivers a mood, a state of mind, gifting the listener two minutes of escapism and the ability to daydream. Drenched in atmospheric textures and hypnotic soundscapes, the single also carries a steady and lightly fuzzy drumbeat, lending the overall aural picture a wholesome, human quality.

Cartography is the talented creative behind such a potent gem. Based in New York City, he’s known by day as Trevor Misplay. That’s an important detail, as his day job has a lot to do with music: engineering, producing, and writing soundtracks for TV and movies. Such an experience has deeply influenced his current output as Cartography, especially when it comes to simplicity and intentional minimalism.

As he eloquently explains: “I made this song in just two short sessions, a huge step forward for me as a producer. In the past, I tended to overcomplicate things: too many elements, too many lyrics. I pushed so hard that the music started to feel insincere. Film sound design sharpened my ear for texture, tone, and dimensionality, and now I want to make music more freely, with less emphasis on lyrics and more focus on feel.”
