Iowa Group Divergent Focuses on Original Material with ‘Runnin’ Free’

A traditionally rock-oriented anthem, ‘Runnin’ Free’ manages not to sound obvious or traditional, focusing on familiar aural formulas and vibrant, energetic and slightly evocative songwriting. Taking a cue from the eclectic pop of the ’70s and ’80s, the single merges roaring, sharp guitar riffs and melodic vocals, making for an adrenaline-filled track that’s radio-ready and targeted to a wide audience. Overall, the listening experience is charming and wholesome.

Behind such vintage goodness, there’s a group of talented and wise musicians with a long history of artistic explorations behind them. Having now reached a venerable age, so to speak, Iowa-based outfit Divergent are able to reflect deeply on how they got here. From their beginning as Chautauqua Road Band during their teen years, to their subsequent long hiatus, to then getting back together many years later and rekindling their love for music once again.

Divergent is the follow-up project to such a prominent experience, with James Richards (guitar, keys, and vocals), Mike McAlister (bass and vocals), and Paul Richards (drums and vocals) finding a path forward and focusing on original material. ‘Runnin’ Free’ is the perfect example of that, a roaring, easy-listening single with the right amount of zest and lyrical intensity.
