Embracing Aitis Band’s Aural Unpredictability…

We didn’t quite know what to make of Aitis Band, at least at first. You see, the group has always been considered rather unconventional and sui generis, pursuing a unique aural path bordering electronica, leftfield, gritty pop jams and everything in between. The result of such an eclectic and bold formula is material that’s not for everyone; not because of its complexity – in fact, Aitis Band feel accessible, from a purely musical standpoint – but due to the band’s roughness and structure-less stream of consciousness.

Imagine a Roland EG101 (a multi-purpose keyboard once produced by the Japanese company) and a MicroKorg synth paired together. Add new wave-esque, monotonous guitars and spoken words on top, and you’ve got Aitis Band. ‘He’s Great’ follows the same recipe, yet it moves into darker, dance-inducing territories, something we appreciate a lot. Aitis’ latest effort, ‘He’s Great’, will perhaps appear to the uneducated listener as a hybrid between techno and post-rock influences; the truth is that it might very well be the case, yet the American outfit makes it truly a personal affair, including whispered spoken words, bold and decadent synths, and a layer of noises and drones.

Aitis Band are former Joan of Arc members Bobby Burg (Love of Everything) and Melina Ausikaitis, and visual artist/musician Ray Borchers.
