Displaying a heightened degree of creativity and compositional skills, ‘The Grand Ah-Whoom’ marks our point of entry into Creatures of the Edge. Judging by what we have heard so far, the American project benefits from a certain eclecticism, focusing on instrumental, synth-powered sound design and a keen cinematic allure. In fact, it’s hard to categorise the single in a box… ‘soundtrac’ might be a more appropriate tag for such a kaleidoscopic offering.
More conventionally, we could call it indie-pop, electronica or even prog-rock (with a big imaginative mind), yet none of those feels right. And eventually, we must succumb to the notion that not every piece of art needs to belong somewhere. ‘The Grand Ah-Whoom’ exists in its own space, a space where Justin Sanfilippo evidently feels safe enough to write bold and playful music. Hailing from Oxnard, US, the talented musician and producer is the keen creative behind Creatures of the Edge.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind the piece, Sanfilippo explains: “Portions of the single were composed 15+ years ago. I tried unsuccessfully to bring it to life on multiple occasions at different stages of my musical journey, but the Creatures of the Edge sound finally found me 1.5 years ago. When it all came together, finally this past winter, I was reading ‘Cat’s Cradle’ by Kurt Vonnegut, and the name of the track comes from the end of that book.”
