Lush, hypnotic and electrifying, ‘I’m So Sorry’ further advances Mareya’s career-long quest for material that’s authentic, honest, and relatable. The keyword here is vulnerability; the Australian songstress is on a mission to dissect and expose her long-standing experience with ADHD and neurodivergence. Focusing on tales of anxiety and depression in a romantic setting, Mareya approaches the subject matter with a rather fierce and striking flair, packing personal lyricism into a glittery pop-rock aural livery.
It’s a formula that works well: ‘I’m So Sorry’ feels like an heartfelt anthem of liberation, a final confession on the back of love-filled turmoil and failed relationships. Yet, there’s a certain playfulness to it all, with Mareya refusing to let such a destabilising factor get in the way of her artistic spark. She’s flying high, just not in the same sky as non-divergent folks. There’s also a tinge of acceptance in it all, and we are confident the song will serve to rally and empower fellow neurodivergent peeps out there.
Of Maori origins, Mareya is also gearing up for an upcoming EP, ‘Glitter Tears’. Delving deeper into ‘I’m So Sorry’, she explains: “It is a raw, pop-rock anthem that is a wake-up call from the depths of depression and anxiety – a confession of how mental illness can drag down not only yourself, but the people you love.”
