Hailing from London, PIRACYISTHEFT are not your average hip-hop outfit. Describing themselves as ‘alternative’, the talented creatives have built an aural universe that’s eclectic and hazy; fusing hip-hop euphoria with modern electronica and hyperpop influences, PIRACYISTHEFT have struck aural gold. The result is material that’s electrifying and familiar, yet boundary-pushing and futuristic. Active since 2024, the British collective has been rather productive.
Following up from June’s ‘FUZZY CLOUDS’, PIRACYISTHEFT are now back with their latest effort, ‘GRIN AND LIE’, a quirky, honest and evocative cut featuring fellow artists No Cash Refunds and Brod1e. We are honestly impressed by the single’s many nuances and fusion-driven outlook. Introduced by a mellow and nostalgic bit (with soul-infused singing), which will return later in the song, ‘GRIN AND LIE’ particularly flourishes on a minimalistic yet punchy synth-driven beat, all delivered with a unique leftfield flair. The emotional contour is heavy and meaningful, and the overall sensation is to be listening to a well-crafted, researched piece of art.
Seriously, PIRACYISTHEFT are making a big statement here, to the point where calling them a hip-hop collective might even be reductive. They are visionaries, in their purest form; they have a clear and personal vision of what their music should sound like. If that’s anything to go by, we are pretty confident in a bright future for the UK-based project. PIRACYISTHEFT are James WLDE, ERN, and RYSKI.
