It’s been just over a year since ‘Criminal’ was released, yet London-based songstress NORA doesn’t appear to have lost her artistic flair; if anything, she’s back with more of it. ‘i made my bed’ is a surprisingly good offering, a vulnerable, personal and relatable jewel sparking the beginning of a new musical era for the Norwegian icon. Jumping from what we described as a “fierce pop anthem” to a soothing, angelic, and hazy brand of minimalist hyperpop, ‘i made my bed’ flourishes on the striking dualism between production and lyricism.
Wrapped in gentle and airy sound design, the record feels almost weightless. The listening experience is both ethereal and sultry, evoking a floating white cloud that’s plenty dreamy and elegant. Such a feeling is mirrored by NORA’s new silken aesthetic, gracefully contrasting with the soft melancholia hidden in her songwriting. Accepting the dark side of attraction and love, the talented creative reckons with “addiction to bad love”, as she so boldly puts it.
Delving deeper into the inspiration behind ‘i made my bed’, NORA continues: “It’s a sensual spiral. There’s a certain glamour in craving something you know is toxic; it’s cinematic. And a little sick.” Rising production/writing duo Georgia Lowe and Archy Levy (Sundown Studios) help NORA’s artistic vision come to life, ahead of a planned string of singles and an upcoming mixtape, ‘happy fcking valentine’s day’.
