‘I Saw This And Thought Of You’ has been a welcome discovery. Part nostalgic and part futuristic, the EP draws from a variety of influences and cultural movements, spanning everything from dreamy bedroom pop to sharp hyperpop, even touching EDM and eurodance territories. In fact, the record opens with perhaps our favourite track on it, ‘Dum Da Di Day’, a playful throwback to the glorious eurodance days of the early ‘2000s – at least that’s how we perceive it.
We should clarify that such an eclectic and hard-hitting EP may resonate with people in various ways, particularly in relation to their age and cultural references. Marking Emily Mulenga‘s debut effort, ‘I Saw This And Thought Of You’ carries a strong DIY ethos, showcasing the London-based creative’s deep commitment to art. ‘Call Out My Name’ is another easter egg, a flashy and melodious gem reminiscent of the sound of the 80s and italodisco. ‘Here 4 a Good Time’ is instead steeped in mainstream pop elements, still carrying a certain retro character.
Mulenga’s vocals are the perfect match for such a quirky, imaginative record. Powered by a whimsical and hazy livery, Emily approaches the listeners as an otherworldly fairy, a talented and gifted entity travelling through time and culture with unmatched charisma. Overall, ‘I Saw This And Thought Of You’ is a highly compelling record, a slice of imaginative aural energy that speaks volumes about Mulenga’s observant aura.
