Jimmy Stanfield Shares Vibrant, Raw Album ‘Right Side of Time’

It took us a while to fully understand the nostalgic, raw ethos behind Jimmy Stanfield’s artistry. Hailing from Melbourne, the Australian troubadour champions a vibrant, guitar-flavoured ethos, one that draws inspiration from a variety of sources, be it blues rock influences or classic psych elements. Whichever way you look at it, Stanfield appears to be walking his own path, paying homage to the great rock tradition while providing organic, wholesome vibes in an industry that’s more artificial than ever.

‘Right Side of Time’ is the perfect evidence of that. Jimmy’s latest album, the record delivers an eight-track intense and nuanced aural journey, one that flourishes on spring reverbs as much as it does on laidback, potent drum grooves. There’s also a certain eclecticism in it all. Take, for instance, opener and third single Maybe I’m Doing Something Right’: a playful piano and anthemic horns help give the track a certain urgency and electrifying flair (horns are performed by Joe Auckland, notable for his militance in Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds).

While ‘Right Side of Time’ was entirely produced by Stanfield himself, the album boasts a series of notable collaborators, the likes of drummer Noah Bond(Cut Worms, Widowspeak), pianist Phil Madeira (Taj Mahal, Lana Del Rey, Elvis Costello), and strings player Nick Rosen (Macy Gray). Even Jimmy’s brothers appear on the record, Brendan Stanfield, working with Ben Irawan on bass and guitars. It’s a bit of a family affair, with father William Stanfield painting the cover art on oil-on-canvas.
