We didn’t quite know what to expect from ‘Sweet Life’. New to New York City-based creative $YNDRM, we find ourselves confronted with a record that’s rather hazy and escapism-driven. It certainly matches its title, with a heartwarming, soothing character that’s part dreamy and part nostalgic. Known by day as Howard Alper, $YNDRM likes to define himself as an “Avant-Rocktronic” project, a label that’s imaginative and eclectic, allowing Alper to expand the sonic picture to a great deal of influences.
‘Sweet Life’ is the perfect evidence of that. Quite artsy and cathartic, the track is introduced by a steady, hypnotic drum beat and the most heartwarming, kaleidoscopic synth-powered soundscapes, ever evolving and modulating. $YNDRM’s vocals are charming, yet delivered with a certain softness and elegance. They never overpower the underlying aural structure, instead completing a sonic framework that’s cohesive and well-balanced.
Delving deeper into ‘Sweet Life’, Howard reflects: “While the minimalist musical vibes are ‘sweet’, the bittersweet lyrics have deeper meaning, leaving the listener asking, ‘Where can you really find the Sweet Life?’” There’s certainly a certain amount of enigmatic character in it, as if we were suddenly catapulted into a vibrant, evocative fever dream. Yet, this time it’s all real, giving us a four-minute break from the gloomy reality around us.
