We were busy writing about Berlin-based creative Ola Bird back in spring, celebrating ‘Friendship Wall’ as a “listening experience that’s euphoric, although in a melancholic way”; we stand by our words. You see, Ola Bird’s artistic universe is a kaleidoscopic place, a space that’s uniquely and authentically hers. Boasting roots in the Polish indie/alternative scene, the talented songstress has now shifted towards a more relatable alt-pop flair, still retaining her cinematic and boundary-breaking imaginative character.
‘Ben Voyage’ caters to that exact ethos. Delving into personal and painful lyricism, Bird sparks a fire on heartbreak and ghosting, on what ends up being a fierce critique of the modern dating scene delivered in a playful, sarcastic manner. Such powerful songwriting is wrapped into contemporary and elegant alt-pop, still featuring sharp guitar tones as a potential nod to Bird’s past.
Exploring the inspiration behind ‘Ben Voyage’, Ola explains: “After giving dating apps a try nearly a year ago, I’ve experienced such volumes of ghosting, gaslighting and disrespect that I had to somehow process it. And since I’ve written dozens of heartbreak songs already, I figured this time I’ll make my own little tribute to those ghosts who haunted me. No more crying, just pure sarcasm and satire.”
