BARCLAY’S Debut with Roaring DIY Cut ‘comatose’

‘comatose’ is a pretty compelling record. Drenched in furious guitar riffs, striking drum grooves and an overall lo-fi, analogue-driven sound, the track marks BARCLAY’S debut effort, sparking an artistic journey that has already received a follow-up, ‘Hot Dog Millionaire’. Overall, we admire the ethos behind the project; sharing a strong DIY character, songs such as ‘comatose’ favour substance over form, with stylish and rebellious songwriting framed in a production that’s rough on the edges, yet still admirably perfect.

The fuzzy and crunchy distortions are a perfect match for head honcho Alex McGrath’s earthy, fierce vocals and imaginative artistry. Originally writing ‘comatose’ as a solo outfit, he then went on to build a six-piece live band to take his music on the road. That’s how BARCLAY’S was born. Hailing from Kentucky, the group is now looking forward to the release of an EP, ‘To a Candid World’.

Speaking about the creative process behind ‘comatose’, McGrath explains: “It was inspired by a line in Terry Gillman’s film ‘12 Monkeys’ that references a ‘Cassandra complex’. Having never heard that term, I was intrigued, and so I researched: Cassandra, a Greek goddess, was blessed by Apollo to always prophesy the truth, but also cursed to have nobody ever believe her.”
