The keen reader might remember Danish composer and musician Nils Lassen for his militance in BlackieBlueBird, an ethereal and elegant dream pop duo featured on Mesmerized in the past. Now, the Danish wizard seems to be looking for new beginnings, a new artistic era that starts today with the timely release of ‘Fingerprints’, Lassen’s debut solo album. Out now via AENAOS Records, the record is still rather hazy and expansive, steeped in gorgeous soundscapes and new wave coolness.
‘Fingerprints’ contains the Nils Lassen that we all know, albeit in its updated and boundary-pushing form. You see, there’s still a good amount of shoegaze, dream-pop and escapism in the album, with mixed male and female vocals giving it an angelic twist; despite that, we also happily witness a wider series of references, a newly-found kaleidoscopic flair that enhances the project’s overarching identity.
Lyrically, ‘Fingerprints’ seeks to explore the increasingly digital nature of our reality, drawing a strong link with analogue works and our collective memories. As Lassen puts it: “It’s about believing in the evidence that we were there – human beings, side by side, forever leaving fingerprints even if it’s just on abandoned handrails leading up to somewhere we forgot.”
