Not all records are equal. Some are exceptionally meaningful and inspired, written from a place of purpose and complete honesty. ‘For Dylan, Forever Ago’ is a fitting example of such records. Penned by Birmingham-based trio Platitudes, the album’s title instantly gives a nod to Bon Iver, echoing the same earthy, decadent and reflective style that we have come to appreciate from the American musician. Exploring alt-country and veiled folk tones, Platitudes do exactly the same.
‘For Dylan, Forever Ago’ is deeply steeped in grief and resilience, acting as a musical catharsis for a rather tragic occurrence: the loss of a son, something that truly happened to the trio’s head honcho Ben Harpwood. A smooth baritone and poetic lyricist, Ben came to know unmeasurable pain, an experience that inspired the entire album. Oscillating between poignancy, gentle anger and melancholic acceptance, ‘For Dylan, Forever Ago’ provides a stark commentary on the aftermath of such an unexpected loss, one that’s all wrapped in gentle aural elements and intricate melodies.
Alasdair Thompson and Alison Bennet (Ben’s wife) complete the talented lineup. Speaking about the album as a whole, Platitudes explain: “It is intended to connect with people who have also experienced grief. The intention is to make people feel less alone, and to give an understanding of Ben’s emotional journey as he struggled to cope with losing his son”.
