Calling Austin his home, Texan instrumentalist Tim Husmann has been championing an artistic identity made up of obscure, gritty sonic matter, filtered through the lenses of his personal sensibility. Releasing music through the moniker 1st Base Runner, the American talent has built a project that in less than two years gained him a plethora of EPs and singles, each one showcasing a slightly different creative angle. Channelling everything from leftfield electronica, synthwave, darkwave and shoegaze tones, 1st Base Runner lets his mind run free, sculpting introspective aural outfits for the keen listener.
Following up on previous effort ‘Light Roars’, Husmann now returns with a brand new EP, a collection of four intense and pensive gems. ‘Night Stalker’ configures itself as a more ethereal record, built over long sounds and mesmerising soundscapes, leaving punchy beats behind while embracing wide reverbs and luscious guitars.
Echoing some of the features of classic 80s darkwave, opening track ‘In The Neighbourhood’ is a beatless, ethereal jewel, laying sparse guitar melodies over vintage synth and a solemn vocal part. ‘Dark Drive Through the Canyon’ navigates abstract territories, providing an endless loop of hypnotising soundscapes. Title-track‘ Night Stalker’ is perhaps the groovier episode on the record, resuming some of the gritty sonic imprint 1st Base Runner is known for. The EP then draws to a close with ‘The Serpent and Space’, another ambient-infused piece.
