Zane Liers Debuts with Bold and Personal Alt-Pop Anthem ‘Dynamite’

There’s a strong sense of rebellion and resilience in Zane Liers’ debut effort. The title is your first clue: ‘Dynamite’ seeks to deal with our troubling reality from the talented songstress’s personal perspective. Hailing from Berlin, lesbian avant-pop phenomenon Liers is rather clear about the song’s purpose: “There’s this constant pressure to stay quiet, to stay ‘polite,’ even when we’re being hurt. Especially for women and queer people, showing anger is still so heavily shamed. This time, I couldn’t stay silent. I couldn’t hold it back. Dynamite is what happened when I finally allowed myself to feel that anger fully — and to honour it.”

The result in its sonic form is obvious: packing hard-hitting, gritty alt-pop elements, the record is both melancholic and glorious, oscillating between fear, boldness and empowerment with cathartic flair. Zane Liers’ luscious, malleable vocals are the perfect match for such a three-dimensional piece. Boasting a touch of soulful energy, they are also able to bundle into striking harmonies when needed (for instance, during the chorus).

While more singles are expected later this year, one thing is clear: the Berlin-based creative knows exactly where she’s headed, both from a sonic and songwriting level. We look forward to hearing more. As Liers continues: “I want people to hear this track and feel less alone. To know that standing up, saying ‘enough,’ lighting the match when your rights, your voice, your existence are under attack — that’s not weakness. That’s strength.”
