Yurina Unveil Eclectic, Luscious Album ‘Neptune Diamond Rain’

A highly eclectic and peculiar record, ‘Neptune Diamond Rain’ showcases Croatian outfit Yurina as a committed creative entity, wondrous musicians not afraid to take risks.

As we approach ‘Neptune Diamond Rain’, we can’t help but feel overwhelmed by the heightened eclecticism present in the album. It’s truly a cosmic, far-reaching record, a collection of pieces oriented towards euphoria and escapism. At times blissful and hazy, at others melancholic and brooding, ‘Neptune Diamond Rain’ showcases all of the rich artistry that propels Croatian outfit Yurina. Written over the course of two years, the record is now out in the world for everyone to enjoy.

Introduced by what has been aptly titled as ‘Intro’, the album announces its otherworldly and free-spirited character from the get-go, layering abstract soundscapes and cryptic vocals over haunting, disharmonious drums. From there, we quickly shift into ‘I Kinda Figured’, a track that oscillates between trip-hop nostalgia and pop relatability. ‘Diamonds’ follows in true anthemic and progressive fashion, showcasing Yurina’s affinity for bordering the line between rock and dream pop. Past single ‘Bliss’ feels lush and hypnotic, especially thanks to its over-achieving bass part and the fine electronica work.

The Croatian group’s expansive vocals are completely up to the challenge, with the alchemy between a male and female tone allowing them a wide variety of stylistic choices. Delving deeper into the album, Yurina explains: “It explores different levels of consciousness and their altered states, multidimensional perspectives, beings and relationships, time-space and space-time continuum, as well as themes of poetry, the body, the soul, connection, opiates, dance and love”.

We are rather impressed by the work Yurina have done so far. The talented band are not really following any popular trend or a particular mainstream formula, instead uncovering an aural path that’s entirely their own. That’s crucial nowadays: authenticity matters.
