Yulan & Blaise is a seriously exciting up-and-coming duo featuring Singaporean-Australian singer and actor Yulan Jack (Deadloch) and Mexican-American multi-instrumentalist Blaise Garza (Violent Femmes).
Having met and fell in love at MONA (Tasmania’s Museum of Old and New Art), the pair thought it fitting also to record their debut single ‘God Complex’ there. The result? An inventive, mind-bending, and deeply intoxicating piece of music that signals the start of something sonically very special.
Described by the duo as an “electroacoustic downtempo track”, ‘God Complex’ features some rather out-of-the-ordinary instruments. Containing a two-stringed bowed instrument called an erhu, a jaguar whistle, and even an EWI (electronic wind instrument) solo, it’s fair to say the tune is not your typical contemporary composition.
Truthfully, however, that’s where its genius lies. Intertwined with the hauntingly beautiful vocal performance of Yulan, ‘God Complex’ unfolds as a mesmerizing sonic journey into sound exploration.
“In its most literal sense, the song is about a lover en route to another galaxy – the ultimate long-distance relationship,” says Yulan. “But the relationship is a microcosm for bigger questions like whether technology is saving us or destroying us and who is being left behind”.
