Wishpenny Shares Stunning Album ‘day after dark’

A nuanced and wholesome listening experience, ‘day after dark’ is a rather simple record, yet meaningful and lyrically intense. You see, the album is built on a favourably acoustic sound, championing acoustic guitars, saloon percussions and folk and Americana stylings. Despite such traditional elements, ‘day after dark’ still manages to come across as contemporary, gently lulled by Regina Russell’s evocative, charming vocals.

The Nashville-based songstress runs Whishpenny with her husband, musician and producer Brian Russell. The two form a duo with a high degree of artistic potential, especially given their long history in musically rich cultural spaces. The title track ‘day after dark’ is one of the most uplifting episodes on the record, and the perfect welcome point for any new listeners. A slightly fuzzy and primal rock’n’roll attitude gets enriched by playful horns, opening the way for more complex tunes later in the tracklist.

Speaking about the inspiration behind their work, Regina explains: “We spent a lot of time selecting this group of songs. Our goal was to make it a 2-sided vinyl experience, to have a sonic and lyrical conversation running across the tracks. I’m super proud of what we accomplished together on this album and hope listeners will find something of themselves in our grooves!”
