Marking Valeria Miró’s latest effort, ‘Guilty’ is an especially refreshing offering. Built on a kinetic mix of Latin-pop and jazz melodism, the piece thrives in the contrast between a seemingly effortless and bright arrangement and heavier, cathartic songwriting. It’s a feature that well illustrates the heightened eclecticism that propels the project. Based in London, but originally from Mexico City, Miró bathes in a variety of influences and moods, yet never betraying the wholesome and luscious character she’s known for.
The shift to a self-produced ethos is quite central to ‘Guilty’, functioning as a powerful self-affirming tool, showcasing Miró’s nuanced and expert artistry. As she explains: “After sitting in studios for years with different producers and seeing how much production can have an impact on storytelling, I got really intrigued and wanted to produce my own music.” The result is certainly striking, with the track feeling playful and meaningful, placing Valeria’s malleable vocals front and centre.
Delving deeper into the personal lyricism that propels the song, Miró recounts: “I wrote this song after my ex broke up with me. It was amicable but so out of the blue, and after the break-up, he kept messaging me to check on me. It made me feel soooooo icky and small, and annoyed. So I wrote down the things I wanted to tell him instead of texting him back.”
